May Water Management: Keeping New Plantings Thriving in Dry Spells

As we move through May, the garden is truly waking up. The days are longer, the temperatures are rising, and for many of us, this is the prime month for getting new shrubs, trees, and bedding plants into the ground.

However, May can be a deceptive month. While we often enjoy beautiful sunshine, it can also bring periods of drying winds and a lack of rainfall that can leave newly established plants struggling. If you have recently invested time and effort into new plantings, this is the most critical time to ensure they receive the care they need to establish strong, resilient root systems.

The Golden Rule: Water Deeply, Not Often

When you do encounter a dry spell, it is tempting to go out with a hose for a quick "sprinkle" every day. Resist this urge! Frequent, shallow watering encourages roots to stay near the surface, where the soil dries out the fastest.

Instead, aim to water deeply and less frequently. A good, thorough soak encourages plant roots to grow downwards, seeking moisture and stability deeper in the soil. This makes your plants far more drought-tolerant in the long run.

Top Tips for New Plantings

  1. Mulch is Magic: Apply a 5cm (2-inch) layer of organic mulch, such as well-rotted compost or bark chippings, around the base of your new plants. This acts like a protective blanket, locking moisture into the soil, cooling the root zone, and suppressing the weeds that would otherwise compete for water.

  2. Timing Matters: Water early in the morning or in the evening. Watering during the heat of the day leads to high evaporation rates, meaning much of the water is lost before it ever reaches the roots.

  3. Check the Rootball: For larger new shrubs or trees, remember that the rootball itself can dry out faster than the surrounding soil. Focus your watering efforts directly at the base of the plant to ensure the core is getting hydrated.

How SCH Supplies Can Help

We know that for larger estates, landscaping projects, or even expansive private gardens, carrying watering cans is simply not practical. Efficient water management often requires the right equipment to ensure your green spaces don't just survive, but thrive.

At SCH Supplies, we design and manufacture high-quality, British-built waterers specifically for this purpose. Whether you are managing a smallholding, a large estate, or public grounds, our equipment is built to take the labour out of irrigation:

  • Towed Water Units: For larger areas, our towed water units (such as our Petrol or Electric Towed Water Units) are designed for use with ATVs, tractors, or ride-on mowers. They allow you to transport significant volumes of water quickly and easily to exactly where it is needed most.

  • Skid-Mounted Waterers: If you have a specific vehicle in mind, our range of Skid Mounted Basket Waterers offers a robust solution for professional landscapers and groundskeepers, delivering controlled, even distribution for anything from formal garden beds to young hedgerows.

Our waterers are constructed from heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant materials, meaning they are built to last season after season.

Final Thoughts

May is a foundation-building month. By being proactive with your watering and ensuring your new plants have consistent moisture while they get established, you are setting the stage for a lush, vibrant garden all summer long.
